Updating xp to sp2
As many companies have found to their cost, installing security updates can be the difference between a working PC and a desk-sized paperweight.
Thankfully, although Microsoft has long since abandoned support for the operating system, Microsoft is still continuing to develop updates, even if they aren't strictly intended for Windows XP users.
1) I recently answered a question from someone who needed to install SP2 before he could install SP3. You might also make a slipstream install CD, which has SP3 integrated into the install CD.
Of course, it is only helpful if you can install from scratch, and not upgrade existing systems where you need to retain installed programs and settings.
I have just tried installing a clean copy of Windows XP Professional (the 64bit version) on VMWare Fusion (Version 1.1.3 (94249)) with default settings.
But after the service pack 2 update has been downloaded and I try to install it, I get an error message saying "Service Pack 2 Setup Error: Failed to install catalog files." Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know how to solve the error?
